The rushnyk (рушник) is an embroidered ritual cloth woven into nearly every important moment of Ukrainian life — most famously, the wedding.
The wedding towel
Couples stand on a special pidnozhnyk rushnyk during the ceremony — tradition says whoever steps on it first becomes head of the household. Bread and salt are offered on another embroidered towel to welcome the newlyweds.
Reading the embroidery
Rushnyk patterns are symbolic: the tree of life, paired birds for the couple, red and black threads for love and earth. Each motif is a wish for the marriage.
A keepsake beyond the wedding
An embroidered rushnyk becomes a family heirloom and a beautiful piece of wall or table decor. See our embroidered home textiles and folk decor.
