Ukrainian embroidery is a language. Every colour and motif once carried a wish or a form of protection. Here’s how to read it.
The colours
- Red — love, life, joy.
- Black — the earth, strength, and (in some regions) remembrance.
- Red + black together — the classic combination of love and sorrow, life’s fullness.
- Blue & green — youth, nature, healing.
Common motifs
- Tree of life — family, continuity, the cosmos.
- Berehynia — the protective mother-goddess figure.
- Geometric diamonds — fertility and protection of the home.
- Roses & periwinkle — beauty, love, lasting affection.
Regional styles
From the dense geometric work of Borshchiv to the floral elegance of Poltava, each region has its own palette and stitch. That variety is what makes every piece unique.
