The motanka (мотанка) is one of Ukraine’s oldest folk symbols — a hand-wound doll that has served as a protective talisman for thousands of years.
Why it has no face
A traditional motanka is deliberately faceless. Folk belief held that a blank face kept the doll from being inhabited by spirits — it stays a pure, protective object rather than a likeness of a person.
Made without needles
The doll is “wound” (motaty = to wind) from fabric and thread without a single stitch or needle. Often a cross is wound onto the face for blessing and protection.
