A christening (khrestyny) is a major family celebration in Ukrainian tradition. Here’s what it involves — and what makes a meaningful gift.
The kryzhma
The kryzhma is a special white cloth or towel the godparents bring to wrap the child after baptism. Often embroidered, it’s kept as a lifelong keepsake believed to bring health and protection.
The godparents’ role
Godparents (kumy) take a lifelong spiritual role and traditionally provide the kryzhma and the christening outfit.
