Pysanky (писанки) are Ukraine’s celebrated Easter eggs — intricate, symbol-covered eggs made with a wax-resist (batik) method. They’re among the world’s oldest decorative folk arts.
How they’re made
Molten beeswax is drawn onto the egg with a stylus (kistka); the egg is dipped through successive dyes, light to dark, with wax protecting each colour. Finally the wax is melted off to reveal the design.
What the symbols mean
- Sun / stars — life, fortune, growth.
- Wheat — a good harvest and health.
- Endless line (meander) — eternity.
- Deer / birds — prosperity and new life.
